10 small SEO tips and tricks that can make a huge difference in 2018
Search engine optimization is a crucial part to any businesses success. In the constant battle to hit that first page optimizing your website among a mass of competitors is only getting tougher.
But that can all be helped with the following 10 tips to increase your ranking. These won’t get you to the top of Google, but follow these steps and you’ll be sure to end up better off than where you started.
Probably one of the most important tips on this page is to have some sort of blog or “guide” to relatable topics. Most people put this one off due to the sheer amount of work that needs to be put in, but when writing these just think how many key words and phrases you can pull off.
As well as boosting your ranking through key words writing articles also helps with the daunting idea of using backlinks (which we will get to later)
When writing an article or even contemplating whether it’s worth it in the first place? Just think to yourself, how many people will actually search for those specific words your business’ SEO revolves around? For example, let’s say you run a cake making business through an online store, maybe you will get a lot of traffic, maybe there are a lot of people searching for that specific product, but how many searches are you actually missing out on? If someone wants to make their own cake, or figure out how to use an oven (for arguments sake). Writing a guide on these sorts of questions will open your presence to a much broader audience and drive them towards your website, even if its not for a sale. Modern technology also comes into play for this as a lot of searches are made via voice command these days. Many news outlets even predict that up to 50% of engine searches will be controlled this way by 2020. So…when talking to your favourite hand held device do people tell them to search for bike assembly instructions? Or is a question more likely to be asked, “how do I build a bike?” Having questions like these answered in your guides will certainly get you pointing in the right direction. The key to having backlinks is making your site incredible informative, and there’s nothing more informative than a “step by step” or “how to”.
#2 Making Videos
Making a video is usually something that businesses tend to overlook. Granted making a video is a lot easier for some companies than it is others, but you shouldn’t let that discourage you. If there is one thing google loves, its highly ranked YouTube videos. So having one the front page of your site will increase your chancing of ranking near the top by a dramatic amount.
Google ranks these videos based on pure stats such as views, comments & likes. Although that isn’t the only thing it picks up on. When producing a video you should make sure it contains key words relating to your site and aim for a length of around a few minutes at the least.
To most this is a given and you can skip this step if need be, but to the people out there just starting out with basic SEO, this tip is HUGE. Over my time I’ve seen a myriad of websites; old, new, colourful, informative, but unless you actually have an expert at hand, most business' don’t consider SEO at all! So, a very short but very effective tip…when creating your website (or if need be you can go back and change it) keywords 100% NEED to be used. A few years ago in a search engine far far away, keywords were the most important part of any sites SEO, unfortunately these were eventually abused and are no longer as effective, however, that being said they still provide a big impact in your rankings.
What are keywords?
Keywords in their very essence are simply words that relate to your website and will be used for ranking. For example: if you owned an eCommerce store selling T-shirts, your entire online presence would be revolved around the biggest keywords being “T-shirts” “buy online” etc. etc. The more key words you fit into any piece of text you are writing, including your titles and headings the better. There are a few tools out there you can use to find the best keywords for your website, my personal favourite the one being provided by google itself.
Although using as many keywords as possible seems like a great idea, it isn’t. Why you ask? As mentioned above people began to abuse such tactics and even resulted into unethical means such as filling their page white and including many keywords as possible in a white text, so that they weren’t visible to the human eye but were picked up by google. So, the result of this is google now penalizing you for having more keywords on your page than you physically need, so don’t cram them into every sentence, but do make sure you have just the right amount.
One of the easier but more time consuming SEO tips and tricks are backlinks.
What are backlinks?
They are links from other websites and pages linking to your own. The higher number you have, the higher traffic you will get in return.
Even though it’s important to get as many backlinks as humanly possible it’s always about quality over quantity. Having one from, let’s say “Forbes” is worth more than 100 from less known lesser ranked sites. This can be a painful and very challenging process and make no mistake a very long one. To get a backlink you must get another site to agree to put your link on their page. Doing so takes a lot of effort and it may even be weeks before you get your first result, but it may be a useful tip to get to know the owners of the websites you wish to backlink from in order to increase your chance. You may be sitting there thinking how is this even possible? Just think of it as making a friend, send them a message, compliment an article they’ve recently written or the services they provide and try to have a more organic conversation. After establishing a connection simply ask them if they would mind linking you in one of their articles that relates to your business. Showing a little interest can go a long way when trying for backlinks.
#5 Make sure google can hear you
Throwing words about your website and paragraphs where you please will only decrease the chances of ranking highly, again this is another simply SEO tip that many people overlook.
Compile yourself a checklist and make sure your website meets the criteria.
1. Are your titles and main headings in <h1> tags?
2. Are you subheadings tagged?
3. Does your URL include your keywords?
4. Does your Title?
5. Are your paragraphs and other body text optimized for key wording?
#6 Automate your social media posts and blog?
Consistency helps immensely with almost anything when you’re trying to engage with people. Uploading an article or posting on social media once a month, then twice a month and then maybe missing a month, isn’t going to help your credibility. Consistency is key. There are a number of tools on the internet designed for this specific task; however they do cost, but remember, it’s always a worthy investment when it helps your presence.
If you need any help with social media management or don’t have the time to do is yourself…
#7 Mobile optimization
Mobile optimization is being a crucial part of any SEO. As technology advances more and more people use their phones in day to day tasks or even business ones for that matter when on the move. Mobile optimization has now become the norm rather than an exception. A couple of years ago Google had confirmed that mobile search queries had overtaken those searched via desktop, It is important to keep up with the change. BrightEdge reports that 79% of all keywords rank differently on mobile devices than they do on a computer; this is why optimization is extremely important for all aspects.
#8 Local SEO
Local SEO is a small part to this article but something that has started to become a big part of engine ranking. It’s getting increasingly important to let google know where you are. Add a map to your site, or an address, anything to show where you are. Letting google know increases your chances of effectiveness with the relevant audience and drives the right kind of traffic to your site.
#9 Reduce Bounce rate
A bounce is when a visitor comes to your website and almost leaves immediately without clicking on anything or moving to another page. Every site has a bounce rate, a great one is considered less than 50% and almost unusual. Most blogs are estimated to have an 80% bounce rate.
So how do we fix this?
Simple, make them click. The majority of people im sure will agree that having pop ups and things thrown at your face is an immediate excuse to press back and find somewhere else for your answer. However, adding an interactive element such as a poll or quiz, or even a video is a great way to keep visitors entertained enough to stick around for a little longer. Obviously a poll or quiz may not be ideal for your website, so have a look around ,see if you can come up with some unique ideas to reduce that bounce rate of yours.
#10 Linking pages
By default your homepage will have a much higher number of visitors and traffic than any other page on your site as this is where they will initially land after clicking your link. A very useful way to even up the numbers is to link your pages to others. Add buttons or links to entice people to click away at your many wonderful and irresistible pages. Linking your pages together doesn’t just even up the numbers for the sake of having a nice looking graph on your analytics, it boosts your entire ranking accumulating more keywords and optimization from your whole website opposed to just your homepage.
As mentioned above, this list of SEO tips and tricks won’t get you to the top of Google but it will help in the long run. Be sure to follow each and every one of these 10 steps to clear the path ahead to reaching your goal!
